Every relationship is unique and each has its upsides and downsides. Understanding is a valuable tool in maintaining a healthy relationship, we all have our individual lives outside our relationships in order to not sabotage your relationship with issues from the outside world. Here are a few things you should know.
Communication is key: This is universal knowledge but it would not be surprising to find out that some couples do not know how this works. There are a lot of things to talk about with your partner, you can never run out of things to talk about. You have needs, they have needs, there are issues to address. If your partner reacts to a situation in a way that makes you uncomfortable, talking through it with them would have such a great impact on your relationship. You may even find out that they didn’t mean it that way, you would get a moment of truth instead of assuming.
Disagreements are inevitable: Conflicts are bound to happen but how you get through them is very important. Are you the type to keep malice when you and your partner disagree? You might need to check that and stop it, it is unhealthy to hold a grudge against your partner. For what it’s worth, he/she might not even know they did anything. Working your way through disagreements without being condescending, aggressive or outright rude is the best way to handle them.

Be a good listener: if you are the type to interrupt when someone is trying to narrate a particular experience to you or you just shut them up by bringing up an unrelated topic. That is not a good trait to possess, your partner would not feel inclined to tell you things this way. If you are empathetic enough, they would not even need to tell you something is wrong before you know it, and most of the time, all they need you to do is just listen.
Know what is important to your partner and take note of it: Your partner comes home and tells you every detail of their day, they made mention of a restaurant where they had lunch for the first time and all through the conversation, they just would not stop mentioning this restaurant. Some days after the conversation, you decided to stop by that restaurant and get them food from there. How do you think that would make your partner feel? They would be so happy and it would help them see how thoughtful you are. You could do this with dates too, take note of important dates.
Appreciate your partner every now and then: Make it a habit to thank your partner once in a while, not only when they do something but also just when you think of how supportive and kind they have been to you. It helps to motivate them to do more. Humans generally like it when they are appreciated, being in a place where we are appreciated makes us feel loved.
